The Seventh: Anthony McCall

Anthony McCall's artwork is a fusion of space, light, and sensory manipulation.
His work is meant not to be seen, but experienced. McCall's work is dependent on the audience's interaction to create the feeling that McCall intended. His work is really pretty simple. McCall takes a projector that displays simple light formations on the walls of the opposite side of the room/installation and then turns off all of the lights. He then has fog/smoke machines at various positions throughout the room pouring smoke into the room until the audience is completely immersed in darkness, smoke, and sharp, directional beams of light.
The effect of all of these elements put together is an understanding (or deeper misunderstanding) of the idea of space and how mailable it really is. A real dynamic sense of space is created by the light beams shattering the fog that is taking up the rest of the space the audience leaves unfilled. The light creates false walls in the room, however they are walls unlike the audience is used to: These walls are transparent, providing a real sense of security however the illusion is lost whenever the beam is broken by the audience and all light illusion is lost.
It is a weird and wild feeling being "trapped" between light beams and experiencing the maliability of space.
